The Artist
Audrey is a Kentucky born artist who moved to Texas a decade ago. While growing up, Audrey always knew she wanted to be an artist one way or another and started drawing at a very young age first inspired by classic Cartoon Network series and Adult Swim anime that would play late at night from Inuyasha to Soul Eater. After having the opportunity to take a clay class at a community college there was a quick shift to the 3-D medium as it re-ignited her artistic spark. Now she continues to use her drawing abilities to further explore illustrative concepts within her work to best combine it with other mediums to broaden her horizons as much as possible as an artist.
The Statement
As a ceramic artist I find myself fascinated in environmental storytelling as the state of a place shares a lot of stories. Most architectural pieces I sculpt in clay are inspired by older style buildings I often see while riding DART to downtown hubs such as Deep Ellum along with other neighborhoods spotted on road trips through different states. I like to think about the presence humans leave behind whether it’s a graffiti tag, litter, packages, or even attempts of gardening. Each are bits and pieces of ourselves that have long lasting effects that can either be a positive or a negative impact on our envornment. Clay is a medium that has survived much longer than the artist so in a way I am leaving my own footprint. In a world leaning towards the digitization of everything there is something therapeutic about getting my hands dirty, rolling out slabs, hand building, and simply slipping and scoring bits of clay together just like artisans from hundreds of year ago have done. Through clay I want to ignite people's imagination with my landscapes and homes, allowing them to create their own stories for these places and connect the familiarities to their own neighborhood or something they might have seen on their commute.
